Cmoy Amplifier

DIY Simple Headphone Amp Tutorial
By Cmoy Design (Mini Pocket Amp)

Cmoy amplifier is currently the most popular headphone amplifier for beginner to DIY. It only use a 9v battery to drive this headphone amplifier, and it sound excellent! The complete headphone amplifier it self is very small, you could pack the circuit board & battery into a candy tint which is portable to carry around with your ipod or any portable mp3 player. To diy this cmoy headphone amplifier is extremely easy and simple, it only take less then a day to complete.
A step by step guide to build a headphone amplifier.
It sound wonder with Ipod.

Ok I am not gonna crap here, Let's start straight to the point.

The Tools

The Cmoy Headphone Amplifier Component Parts 1

The Cmoy Headphone Amplifier Component Parts 2

A Picture say a thousand words, As stated very clearly that what are the component needed for this Cmoy amplifier. Print and bring this out with you when you go to the radio shack to get this component.

Assembly The Cmoy Headphone Amplifier

Step 1
Get ready your PCB Board.

Step 2
Mark out the center ground.

Step 3
Solder the battery clip wire on to the PCB board as shown above.

Step 4
Solder the Power Led onto the board as shown above.
Add R6 Resistor 10k Ohm as shown above.

Step 5
As you can see on the picture above, the green line indicate that we have to solder and connect hole 4 to 5 to 6. On the other side we have to solder hole 9 to 10 to 11.
____________________________________
*NOTE: How to solder the green line?
There are 2 type of joining the green line, for beginner I will suggest you to use type "A".
Type "B" need more stable hand but less of trouble to cut the left over wire from resistor or capacitor.
___________________________

Once you have done up to step 5, you should test your circuit by connect it to a 9v battery and toggle on the switch, the led should be lighted up. If you can't get the led to work, please go back to STEP 4, Reverse your Power Led connection and test again.
This is what you should have by now

Step 6
Mount the (R1) 4.7k Ohm 1/4 w Resistor onto the board.
Solder the green line shown above.

Step 7
Mount (C1) 220uF 16v Capacitor.
Solder the green line as shown above.

Step 8
Mount R2 Resistor.
Solder green as shown.

Step 9

Mount 8-Pin IC Socket.
Solder green line as shown.

Step 10
Mount R3 Resistor.
Solder green line as shown.

Up till now you show have something look like this.

Step 11
Mount C2 Capacitor.
Solder green line as shown.

Step 12
Mount R4 Resistor.
Solder green line as shown.

Step 13

Mount R5 Resistor.
Solder green line as shown.

Step 14
Now we have 2 wire connect from the capacitor to the IC Socket.

Step 15
Slot the IC Chip into the socket. Compatible Chip are as follow:
Blurr Brown IC: OPA2227
Blurr Brown IC: OPA2132P
Blurr Brown IC: OPA2132PA
Blurr Brown IC: OPA2134PA
TL072
We are almost done...

Step 16

Just follow the wiring connection.

Step 17 (Final Step)
Box it up! And that's your new toy
Congrats you have made it!

Don't mind me asking, but how much does these components cost exactly?
And can all the components be obtained from sim lim tower?

Anonymous said...

I am sorry for asking again, but how do you finally put the circuit board in the tin?

I am sketchy about the details.

TTrev said...

Slumber the part is least then $25. I got all my part from SLT accept the "IC" Blurr brown opa2227 which I order online from U.S and they mail it to me. As for your qns on how to place the circuit board into the tin, alright the circuit board itself is rather small so you can actually put inside but do cut out a pcs of paper to put underneath the board in order not to short circuit the board by the tins... for the switch and Left/Right Input and output, I use a Single Hole paper puncher to punch a hole onto the tins so that i can screw all the component onto it... Hope this help you! Cheers!

Anonymous said...

It sure does ;)

ken said...

hi, William, are u able to sell one to me.... im not good with diy...

TTrev said...

Ken! Sure, Do email me your budget, see if we could work it out.

Anonymous said...

i can't wait to try this out, this helps a lot!

do you have a schematic that you used? is it like http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/ ? where I can tweak it?

TTrev said...

Hi johnny! First of all thank for visiting this site!

You could get the schmatic at http://diy4fun.blogspot.com/2007/11/cmoy_11.html

As for the tweaking, you could buy some great capacitor and resistor shown on this forum http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/home-theater-audio-video-news/2375-you-cannot-afford-audiophile-grade-cmoy-headphone-amplifier.html

Anonymous said...

Great tutorial. The visuals of the circuit board are great. If I may add though, the 10k pot is an optional part, as the amp will be fine on it's own without it, since the original design didn't have one.

TTrev said...

Thanks for e comment Luke!

Anonymous said...

Thank you bro!!! I followed your tutorial and manage to build 1 myself..since then ive tested a couple and tweak some of it.......

But...still quite blur when tried to combine tle2426 in the original circuit by you..little help please?

Anonymous said...

Well anonymous your this comment should be post at Grado RA1 session, "Thank you bro!!! I followed your tutorial and manage to build 1 myself..since then ive tested a couple and tweak some of it.......

But...still quite blur when tried to combine tle2426 in the original circuit by you..little help please?"

Make sure you are getting the 3 Pin Type of TLE2426.

Anonymous said...

I know the 3pin tle2426.
I just dont know how to integrate the diagram to cmoy...totally newbie...

maybe an instruction let say xxxx go to xxxx and such?

TTrev said...

CV6149 i have added the extended instruction on the bottom of cmoy tutorial, study the picture and u should know where the connection are. cheer!

OMG bro!!
that is awesome!!

Thanx alot!! Im sure it help me and other people too!

TTrev said...

I am glad to hear that! :) Wish you success!

Unknown said...

Hi William..

Tkx a lot for the link..Just wanted to ask a quick question..I used a 220 muF 35V capacitor, instead of the 16V that you mentioned..When I built the amp (with the TLE2426), the bass is weak (while other instruments sound kinda OK)..I guess the bass is normally more crunchy (I had built a couple of CMoy's earlier)..Could it be because of using the wrong capacitor? I am driving the amp thru' a 9V DC wall wart adaptor..

Atul

TTrev said...

atul, for the caps at 35v is fine, that is only the indication of how much voltage can the caps tolerate before it explode. As i think your main DC supply is 9V DC I think a 35v is a waste, suggest a 16v cap will do the job. Or if u have the intention to use a 18V then get a cap of 25V, as long your caps voltage is larger then your power suppy DC Voltage will do.

For bass output we require higher uf from the caps. As 220uf is more then enough to hold the current, you can try using higher value like 470uf to hold even more current.

Conclusion: Get a 470 uf 25v Capacitor to Replace the 220uf cap.

Unknown said...

I changed the caps at the power suppl end to 470 uF but bass still sounds weak..I guess the prob cud be elsewhere like bad soldering :(( There cud be one more thing. Do u think changing the caps in the audio part from 01.1uF to 1uF might fix the weak bass prob?

Unknown said...

I meant changing from 0.1uF to 1 uF (and not 01.1uF as quoted earlier..)

TTrev said...

early on you were saying that u had build a couple cmoy sometime ago which you don't have the problem with your current headphone. May i ask few qns, are you using the same gain @11 for your previous cmoy? do you also use a tle 2426 for ur previous cmoy? ok why am i asking this qns becoz, reason might be the gain level try change ur gain to 6 by change R3 to 2k ohm. as for ur info tle2426 max current is about 50-60ma so is pretty low as i can say, other wise you may one try to use the standard Power supply instead of Virtual Gnd.

Unknown said...

hi neo, My earlier CMoy's followed the same circuit as shown in tangent's website. So the gain was always 11. But the prob with that design is that it becomes unbalanced after some time. Hence I was looking arnd for a circuit which has a better supply part and that is when I chanced upon ur website. I had heard that the TLE2426 performs better than the standard CMoy power supply as shown in the tangent website. This is my first attempt with the TLE. For your info I am using a Grado headphone with this. I will try out your suggestion about changing the gain and see how it goes..

Unknown said...

hi.. i'm rachel. i've try this out, but i cant get an expected result.. the sound is vy soft.. do u hav any suggestion to improved this circuit or i should add anything else?
u may email me or add me at msn messenger. my email is ngyting@hotmail.com
thanks.

Unknown said...

hi neo..Changing the gain from 11 to 6 did the trick !! Thank you for your help. I am hoping to see some articles on ur Blog about Apheared 47 amp sometime..

TTrev said...

Congrate Atul! Mind sharing some picture of your Cmoy amp so that i can place it on my blog to encourage more ppl to build their own amplifier?

Can you show the back of a completed amp? I am unsure from the 'follow the green line' if there is just one piece of metal wire soldered at two end points, or of its laid on the board and soldered to the board.

Anonymous said...

Change the input caps to 0.47uF and the power cap to 470uF will improve the bass. If you want more bass, try 0.68uF input caps.

Thanks William - I built the CMOY using the above mod and it sounds great - OPA2132PA.

TTrev said...

Congrate David! hope you enjoy it!

Anonymous said...

hi, great site. do you have a diagram for 2 single channel opamps?

TTrev said...

sorry i don't get what u mean? is a mono block you mean?

Anonymous said...

no, some opamps that I have are single channel, not dual, so you need one for left and one for right speaker

Anonymous said...

you can check out original chumoy diagram in headfi.google for it!

Anonymous said...

I am a new to the world of electronics, and I was wondering if this amp could power 2 4inch speakers at 8ohms and 2 watts each. Or maby some .5v 1inch 8ohm speakers? I would also like to know exactly how it works, do you just plug in your input signal via 3.5mm jack, and then plug the speakers into the output? What does the pot do? How long does the battery last, and is it possibal to run it off of a few AA batteries instead of a 9v? Thank you for all of your help, if you could e-mail me detailed responses at yeoj2131@hotmail.com I would much appreciate it. Thanks again!

Whoops i got the variable resistor with 3 pins instead, how do you noe which is the ground?

Same for stereo jack....

Unknown said...

great tutorial!
i just have one question.

how would you wire it if you were to remove the power switch and just have the unit turn on when you plug something in the input? something like how active guitar pickups turn on when you plug in a cable. i know it's possible but i just don't know how to do it.

it's just a little mod i'd like to do when i try to build this.
thanks!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for this great tutorial. I've made some changes: I used 470uF capacitors (instead of 220u) this made a big improvement in bass and I used a diferent opamp, AD712JN, and it works very good in this design.
Thanks for all.

The sound is much better, all I did was p2p solder two 1N5308 (Central Semiconductor) directly on my OPA2227 (Pin 1 -> 4 and Pin 7 -> 4). This simple modification biases the opamp into Class A using the best technique The JFET Cascode

They may be omitted in most cases. They are needed only when the input signal has a direct voltage component (ie, direct coupled single ended transistor stage without an output capacitor). You can try building one without the input capacitors, and then put them in if the output seems to clip. The low frequency response will be better without them in circuit.

Indian exporters said...

He's using the caps to filter the input signal and get rid of any DC component, to not mess with the bias of the amp. Caps are not just for transients, they are used for a lot more.

Software Company in Ranchi said...

You done some nice modification in to the original Cmoy circuit but I recommend to use some different kind of power source cos' capacitor-voltage divider has one problem, it gets very easily unbalanced and that means that the positive and negative voltage goes uneven and the virtual ground starts to swing around which can causes problems when battery voltage is dropping.

I want to get the most out of my Shure audio SRH750DJ headphones. Is this the right circuit and opamp chip combination to be using?

my iphone isnt giving me the loudness that i would expect from these. thats why i want to make the amp.
what chip would best suit these headphones? and what would have to be changed in the circuit for the chip to function correctly?

heres the headphones ratings:
frequency response: 5-30000 Hz
sensitivity: 106 dB/mW
Impedance(at 1 kHz): 32 Ohms
Maximum input power: 3000 mW

jarredjoffe said...

who? shure audio?

they sound amazing but dont get very loud with just my iphone.

question about the circuit:

what is the rating of the power led?
can i use a incandescent 12v 50ma green power light?

and is the pot linear? will a 2g 1/4IN 20mm pot work?

Wow, thanks for putting this tutorial up for us. I've assembled one for a digital recording studio. It's almost finished, I only need a battery connector and the correct opamp (ordered and on the way). I wonder about the power consumption though. Does it really need a 9 volt battery? I was thinking about trying to find a li/ion cell I could rig up to use usb charging. What kind of battery life do you experience with these units btw?
